    There was a special tool that NCR engineers used to have in their toolkits, but they are hard to get nowadays. Many people find a bottle opener works well, the sort for removing crown tops.

    these rings usually need to be cut off and replaced, using a dremel grinding disc.
    trying to pry them off sometimes tears off the entire head of the button,then you have a lot of problems.

    Thanks for all the tips. I wanted to preserve the patina on the rings so I figured out a way to size the inserts down and used 3M thin double faced adhesive to install them. Dug the old pieces out with a dental pick. Used a 9/16 gasket cutter to size the inserts down. Not perfect but great from 5 feet away!
