Just finished this model 236 detail adder in antique copper finish. This machine was a mess when I bought it. Broken key arms, missing and broken counter wheels, messed up cash drawer, missing the lower counter dust cover and lots of rust. I started on the mechanical part first and almost stopped a couple times when it looked like it would be more work that it was worth. I'm glad i didn't because it turned out very nice.

You saved another antique cash register for future generations.

I had a local shop copper plate the top sign and drawer front. The rest of the cabinet is the original copper plating. The antiquing is not oxide but flat black spray paint and then rubbed off. The drawer front and top sign were brass and almost all the original copper was gone. The rest of the cabinet is Bronze. I guess the copper sticks to bronze better than brass. There are several pictures in Dicks' tech column in the current Bronze Idol of the re sizing of the pot metal counter wheels. That was a major job.

What did you do to the keyarms?

I don't have anybody local to nickle plate them so being frugal (cheap) I came up with a method that makes them look OK and still look old. I treat them with a rust killer them I use a soft wire wheel to remove all the dead rust and loose plating. Then I buff them hard. The remaining nickle will buff to a shine and the metal (steel?) will buff out to a shiny Finnish. I then spray them with lacquer.

They really look good, a nice alternative to paying $15 plus per keyarm for plating.

Beautiful job on your 236 National Cash Register!!! Do you do your own plating or does someone do it? It sure looks nice!!!
