    Good Morning Team:

I have a question about sandblasting brass pieces of a well tarnished and corroded machine:

What are your thoughts about hitting the parts with a sandblaster first and polishing the flat surfaces afterward? What type of media do you use to blast the dirt and tarnish away? Is it a good idea, or does it do damage to the brass?

I welcome each every response about this method of cleaning dirty brass.

Im new to the restoration game and to collecting these pieces of art. I'm loving it though!.

    Looking forward to your replies.

    Thanks, Frank Pugliese Long Island.

You want to use glass beading only, no sand. You can buy it from "Eastwood" in 50 pound bags. Expensive with shipping. After I glass beaded them I would sand the flat edges with 600 grit sandpaper & they polish great after that but it's a little hard to keep out of the pattern. If you are good at polishing they come out great. I wasn't great at it & after I got a 400 keyboard wound around the buffing wheel I started taking them to a professional guy that really did excellent work. He started off in the 2000's at $300 for a 313 cabinet including the nickel parts but was up to $1000 when I stopped doing restoration in about 2018. We polished the entire part including the pattern & nickeled the key arms & the counter cover, As with all things it takes time & practice to get it right.
