    I agree with the water wash approach. I got away from the lacquer thinner cleanup many registers ago.
    I have a laundry tub setup with hot and cold running water and a spray.
    I use a water soluble paint remover to remove the old lacquer and cleanup with water and a stainless steel tooth brush.
    I always polish with cotton gloves to hold the part and wipe away compound residue as I go.
    After polishing I water wash with lime- a- way and a brass tooth brush and dry with a bath towel.
    Lime-a-way works quite well and doesn't have the ventilation requirement that ammonia does.

    I will try the lime away to see how well it works. With the ammonia I keep a box fan blowing on my softly and it gets the smell away from me. I use a nylon brush myself so I dont scratch my newly polished brass
