  • I recently picked up this NCR 99-2-DB-6E floor model. The register works great, I just cannot figure out the intent of the key bank set up.

    1. The key banks are separated between black and red.
    2. Black goes to $9.95, red goes to $9.99.
    3. Only the black key checks show up in the amount purchased.
    4. The red numbers have no corresponding counter reel (checked behind the glass).
    5. When ringing up a purchase, you can press black and red keys (but only black show up in the amount purchased).

The guy I got it from thought it was used in a shoe store in upstate New York. Thank you to Bill Hall and Dick Witcher for their ideas, which point towards a rare split machine, possibly with black used for retail and red for wholesale purchases. This is an interesting register and I would appreciate any other thoughts on this set up.

Also, rather than having a black frame behind the top counter glass, the frame is screened onto the glass along with the finger pointing to the amount. The back glass is busted. Any ideas who could fix this or how I could change to the regular frame set up?

    Thank you all!

    Chris

The red keys would not have been for amounts like wholesale since there are no counters. More than likely the red numbers only print on the receipt and journal printer. These numbers would be used for some sort of reference like an item number or customer number for charge posting accounts.

Thank you. Your suggestion is a strong possibility. The seller told me that the register was used in a shoe store. The red numbers have $ denominations. Assuming nobody messed with the key checks, could it be that the red keys were used to log a deposit?

The register is not electric. Likely that I misread the model number. It seems: 99-2-DB-6F (not 6E).

It is possible that the machine would print a "retail price" in the red keys and the black numbers would be the "actual selling" price which would add to the total counters.

You could look on the printer electrode to see what what they sold or the meaning of the 2 banks of keys. The electrodes would print an advertisement or saying on the front and pack of the paper. Unfortunately not all machines have these, but you may get lucky.
