Some crankers have a long shaft sticking out the left side of the a,b,d,e,h, and k keystems and then some don't. My question is, what is the purpose of the longer shaft, can you replace a long shaft with a short shaft and still trip the mechanism?

A model 92 and a 95 both have long shafts sticking out the left side of the A through K clerk keys. A model 452 and a 842 does not. My question is what is the purpose of the long shafts. Does it have anything to do with tripping the mechanism? Or do they make the printer print something different? Or?
