In a recent conversation with an advanced collector I mentioned that I had an Amount Purchased Top Sign with a serial number stamped into the bottom ledge of the sign that matches the serial number on the data tag and bottom drawer sticker. I don't recall ever seeing this before, and I checked the 125 top signs I have at the house and none had any serial number identification on them. This is a large Renaissance design top sign with a wide bottom ledge that made this feasible to do. Can anyone offer a reasonable explanation as to why the sign would be numbered? Photo's attached.

Thanks in advance for any input.

I have never seen that before. Do you think it may be for warranty?

In later years NCR stamped the serial # on the back right side frame. People would steal the register & remove the serial # plates & resell the machine. I found a few in my territory that had the serial # plates missing but they insisted that it was still in warranty. I got the serial # off of the back frame & they found out that it was a salesman that was doing it.
Yours was probably a for runner of this type of theft.
