  • NCR finish question was created by Jack Perri
Hello.New member here. I am currently refurbishing a NCR 211. I have seen pictures of this model in different finishes. Some polished brass and some with black inlay. I have no paper under the drawer. Is there another way to identify the original finish? Some one painted the brass and has been stripped back to the brass. I really like the black inlay but not sure how to go about getting that finish. Any advice would be appreciated. Does any one know what finish the key arms on a 211 brass machine are supposed to be? I think they may have been nickel but not positive. Thanks

The copper oxidized finish you are talking about was very common on that model. The brass panels would be copper plated, polished and then oxidized to give the dark look. Then the highly polished edges and some of the highlights would be polished again to bring out the bright copper for contrast. This generally best done by an experienced polisher.

Below are some photo's of a copper oxidized finish on a cast iron case register. More costly than a polish or nickel plating job, but well worth it.

I can have your cabinet redone in antique copper and the key stems in nickle plate.
