When having your key stems nickle plated always put on an old set of key rings before sending them to the plating shop.
then you don't have to worry about the new key rings fitting.

Another practice I have adopted is to fit and install glass key checks and rings before reinstalling the stems.
It is much easier to make fit corrections with the checks and rings with the stems out of the register.

That's a great tip. Much easier than doing it in the machine. Thanks!

Thanks!

I recently gave a plater some very rusty key stems and asked whether he can do and he gave me the OK. I had asked that he only plates up to the hole in the arm, however he gave them to an apprentice and he done the whole of the arm including the cam, as he had to give them a double to triple coat of copper to fill the pitted part of the key stem, they looked great after but I have had no end of problems to get them to work in the machine. The cams were jamming in the guide and when the cam engaged with the adding segment bail it would jam as well. On some of the key arms the shaft would not go through the hole for installing back into the machine. Next time I will take the cams off the key arms. Milton

The last set that I had done was so bad that I took the key arms from a 711 & punched out the key cam rivets & switched all of the key cams. I still had to do a lot of work on the rear tails that go between the key stops or neck ties.

I don't know why we pay someone to make work for us. I know that I asked not to put the key arm as a whole in the tank, but they try to save us money to save time (their time not ours).

I asked my platter why they couldn't do just the front portion. He said that a commercial plating tank is 4 feet deep so to just do the tops only uses 6 to 8 inches of the tank & it is just not cost effective for him. They usually hang about 4 or 5 on a wire & wait till they get enough stuff to get a full tank. They charge so much per part just to wire them up also. Most platters think that they are plating a Harley motor cycle part & more is better where they can just flash coat it & it will be fine. It dose have to be copper plated first & this is another layer to be considered. If there are deep pits, they have to grind most of it out before plating & this helps with the thickness. There was a guy in upstate NY that built a special tank for doing the key arms. It was like a long tank that was about 12" deep & 20 feet long. He had a motor attached to a shaft that was mounted above the tank. he hung the key arms to the shaft so that they only went in up to the center hole. It was off center like a crank shaft, so that as the motor turned it would lift the attached key arms up & down so that it keeps the fluid mixed up & plates evenly. There was also a guy in Texas that would plate them the right way but I haven't seen him advertise lately. He used to set up at the show. He charged a bit more & at $30 plus per key arm it get expense.
Another thing that causes a problem is if the key arms are dirty so they need to be supper clean.
