Sir,

I’m trying to repair my model 238 and to be honest, it is next to impossible to get anyone to assist. I came to your site hoping to ask a maintenance question, but I guess you have to be a member to ask a question. I even reached out to Dick Witcher and he told me purchasing his dvd should help, but it was a dead end. Do you have anyone in your group willing to answer some troubleshooting questions? I thought I wanted to get into restoring these, but the lack of information and the lack of resource sharing has persuaded me to hopefully just finish this one and be done. Thank you for your time and hopefully any information you can impart.

Paul

Thanks for the email, and please don't get discouraged. First let me ask where you are located so I can send you to someone thereby who might be able to help assist you in getting the machine up and running. Second, you do not need to be a member to request assistance. There is a lack of info on antique cash registers, and unfortunately, many collector's collect for profit and only view the machines as potential profit and don't try to repair or restore. I will try to assist you. What type of difficulty are you experiencing with this register? and what have you attempted to do?

Bill,

Thank you for your response. I have a Model 238 that has the following issue (please excuse my lack of knowledge on terminology). When I depress a key, everything moves as it should; the key goes down, the flag goes up and the bell chimes, but then it locks in place. To reset it, I have to depress the manual reset switch on the right side, depress the flag lock and push down the bell striker and then the bale will go crashing down. This thing was in rough shape when I got it and I’m very excited to get it up and running. I’m out of South Mills, North Carolina which is right on the border of Virginia close to VB, Chesapeake and Norfolk.

I’m an avid “builder” and a member of multiple clubs and this is honestly the first club that the majority of patrons are in a profit based hobby, but I can also understand. Such a small group and a dwindling amount of Cash Registers will cause it.

Thank you for any information you can give and I look forward to hearing from you.

I will post your email. If you give me your phone number and a good time to call, I will call you tomorrow and try to work you thru this. No guarantee but I will try.

I called the fellow who had issues with his model 238. He was pleased to learn I posted the email, and was extremely happy that two of our members contacted him offering assistance before I called him this evening. Thanks guy's for helping this fellow out. He is now determined to get the machine working.
