    Hi Everyone,

I hope people are doing well out there.

I am starting to fix and clean up a Model 8 that I picked up a while back. I am attempting to figure out how to make my own strips for the detail adder wheels. I talked to Milton on the phone and he was nice enough to walk me through his spreadsheet. Unfortunately, all the wheels on my register are too far gone to have anything to refer back to. I was hoping to check my thinking to make sure that I am programming my Excel sheet correctly.

For example the $0.05 adder wheel: The lower wheel starts at $0.05 and goes up to $1.45 in 5 cent increments. Then the upper wheel starts at $1.45 and goes up to $42.05 in $1.45 increments in the opposite direction. Is that correct? The rest of the denominations would follow the same logic.

It seems pretty straightforward but I wanted to check with the experts. This is my first experience with the detail adder machines. I hope to be able to pick up a clock for it at the swap meet in September. It will be my first trip to a club event!

    Thanks all,
    Blake

Unfortunately you are a little off, the lower wheel has 30 positions, the first being a blank black bar. Then .05 increments for 29 times ending in $1.45. When the key is pressed the 30th time, the blank bar is displayed on the lower and the top advances from a blank bar to $1.50, then that increments $1.50 for 29 times for a total of $43.50.

FYI, early detail adders can have a 0 instead of the black bar.

Glad you will be attending the swap meets. As fro the detail adder strips why not just buy them from DEP or Billy Hall and save yourself a lot of time and aggravations. Not that costly, and you will receive a good product. Will you be setting up at the swap meet? Make sure you make your motel reservation so you can take advantage of the club discount rate.

Thanks Todd that makes sense. I have the black bar in the Excel file but I did not make the connection that the upper wheel would take the 29 0.05 increments PLUS the “value” of the black bar. I will make that update on the upper wheel. Glad to hear I was at least close!

    Bill,
I will reach out to Bob and see about just ordering the strips. Either way, I want to try to learn how to do some of these things myself in case I ever get in a bind and need to make them. I am not going to be setting up a table at the swap meet, I am just starting to collect and I don’t really have anything to sell. I am more in the mode of buying and building my collection.
