Saw this on CL. Guy says its super rare and wants 5K or best offer. Is this machine that rare? Looks like it might be a model 12

No, it is not rare nor worth that much.

Always BEWARE when you see items listed as Original, Rare, Very Rare and One of a kind. Including the stuff posted on this site with that wording.

yes, that word gets thrown around a lot and has little value. I was just curious about the machine

At the last Chicago show, a dealer inside the show had a model 12 for sale. I asked what he wanted for the machine, his response was "that machine is very rare, there were only 50 made". I guess I laughed a little and said, how do you know that? He said because the cash register book said so! I replied, No, the book says, 50 are know to exist when the book was written in 1990. Since then, I'm sure 100's have been found. He didn't like that answer, and blew me off. He never gave me a price, but later I found out he wanted $3000, needless to say, it didn't sell. Funny thing, later in the day, another dealer shows up with another model 12 just down the isle from him, asking $1400, i don't know if that one sold or not.

Harry, does that mean that you will pay $1000 for an unrestored 12?

I bet you would sell me one for $3000!! if you paid $1200 and $1600 for restored machines, why did you say unrestored ones are worth $1000-$1800?
Realistically an unrestored 12 is worth less than $1000. I have had one for sale at the cash register swapmeet for 2 years priced at $750 and has yet to sell.
