(I am not sure if this is the right section for this post)

I am new to the club and also fairly new to collecting these beautiful cash registers. I am having trouble with a register that I picked up off of Craigslist. It is a Model 452 and Serial Number S125050. One of the neat things about the register is that it was brought to the US from Brazil back in the 80’s. When I bought it the previous owner said that it has worked in the past but no longer. It looks like the register is stuck mid-cycle and I can get the crank to move back and forth slightly but that is about it. I stripped it down and I do not see anything that is broken, bent or rusted. I think the jam is on the left side of the machine but I have been staring at it for a month and cannot get anywhere. I put a few videos on YouTube to show where I am at. If anyone can take a look at let me know any thoughts on what I can do to get it unstuck I would be grateful.

Thank you!

check the printer area for any type of foreign object. coin.,screw, etc.
insert a screwdriver in the rear side above the bell in between the fine toothed gear and the pall and you will be able to crank much further back and forth, sometimes completely all the way backwards to the starting position.

Lombard,
I gave it a shot and even with the ‘A’ key pushed in and making sure the drawer is pushed in, I still cannot get it to crank.

Dep,
I took the printer covers off and cannot find anything obstructing any of the mechanism. When I started to trouble shoot the problem originally, I removed the anti-reverse pawl. Both videos I posted show the crank movement with that pawl already removed so even with that pawl removed it will still not go in reverse.

Thanks again everyone for the help, please keep the ideas coming!!

I make a repair DVD set (3 disk) for each series where I take them apart & show how it works, etc. It's not going to make you a great mechanic but I think it will help. $45 plus $7 shipping. It looks like most of your printer is missing. It probably is in the printer area??? This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.

I received the register in the condition that it is in. The guy I bought it from said that it worked prior to him moving and now it is stuck. Not sure how much I believe that but oh well. I don’t have access to a bunch of parts so I am trying to be as gentle as possible and not break anything. What kind of degreaser do you use to break down the old grease and oil?

I added right side and back pictures. I have removed the back frame to have better access.

Thanks again.

If you removed the back frame there is a spring & arm on the back frame that moves the indicator liner & with it not there it can be just that the liner is jamming the machine. Buy the DVD set.

Thanks for the note Dick. I actually bought the DVD set a few months ago. I have watched them through a few times and I am still having a hard time diagnosing the problem. I specifically remember you noting that item about the indicator arm in the video and checked to make sure that was not the problem. I think it may be something in the printer area but I am not sure about taking the type wheels apart. I posted on here to see if anyone has had similar issues or ideas on how to fix the problem.

Again, thanks everyone for the input.
