313 Won't Stay In Time. was created by poolmandoug
I inherited a 313 that was mostly in pieces and today I tried to put it back together. With the right side frame off I reinstalled the fork that rotates the main cam line. I then set the machine in time by setting the timing notch at the top of the shaft while in the home position. I then hand operated the bail (sp) to test the register.

When I operate the register at a steady pace the full stroke and the timing work fine. However, if I every time I cycle the downward stroke very quickly the timing notch jumps forward as the cam line moves about a half tooth and puts the machine out of time. I can push it bach before I start another rotation and the teeth on the fork will go back in to the correct position. My first thought was that I might have a broken tooth on the main cam line gear but they are all ok. Could worn teeth cause this or am I missing something?

Thank you for any thoughts or suggestions!

If you install the keyarms, it will stay in time. Rotating it by hand without the keyarms allows the key coupler to fall lower then when the arms are installed.
