    Hi Everyone,

I am hoping to get some help with a jammed up register. I got a great deal on this model 359, pretty much the cost of gas to get from Huntsville to Atlanta. It is the first total adder machine that I have gotten that has special counters, as this one has a counter for “Hotel” and “Barn”, as well as “Paid Out”. The total adder itself had many of the teeth broken off and once I removed the mechanism, the machine operated a little bit better. The problem that I have now is that one of the special keys got pushed down slightly without a currency and now the machine won’t operate. I attached a few photos to help you experts try to help me diagnose the problem. A few things I have tried/noticed:

    1. This is the first machine that I have seen with a cam underneath the main shaft of the key arms. From what I can tell, this cam engages with the 3 special key arms and it has 2 other arms that interact with the total adder mechanism. 1 of these is attached to a gear that I believe goes to the printer.

    2. The anti-kickback pawl and u-shaped transfer gear are not engaged yet and are able to be moved with my finger so this doesn’t seem like the issue.

    3. The 3 special key arms all have a small “foot” that flips down when pressed that doesn’t allow it to be pulled back up unless you disengage it. The arm goes up enough for the foot to flip down and I can disengage it to pull the arm back down but the machine won’t reset.

I looked through the discussion posts and I think I have tried the common errors. The only thing I am left with is maybe something with the printer, based on item (1). How would I diagnose this and if it is the case, how would I fix it so I can reset the machine and get it to operate again? Any other ideas on what could be wrong with it?

I appreciate any help or insight that you all can give me.

The special keys will not push down by themselves. They push down just like you have shown in the pictures, then you have to push down an amount key to register sale. Both keys will go down at the same time.
Lombard is correct, you either have to have the cash drawer closed or the compulsory cash drawer option disengaged to operate.

Man, just when I thought I was done making rookie mistakes...

Y’all were right, I must have switched the auto closed door selector so putting a drawer in did the trick and I was able to get the machine unstuck.

Now when I operate the machine, the regular currency key arms work smoothly but working the special keys is extremely difficult. Do you know what is causing this? Is that cammed shaft they are connected to similar to the shaft in the 450 machines where you get the sludge that turns to cement inside the shaft and makes it hard to operate? How do you deal with this?

I really do appreciate all the help!

    Blake

Sure, here you go. The other side looks the same without the small square notch on the outside of the shaft.

At least I think it is the shaft inside of a shaft design...
