    Hello,
I recently finished a refurbishment of an NCR 6000 series. Picture attached. It was mostly cleaning, lubricating and painting. The machine works but the subtotal/total function, activated by the lever, does not work. It always reads “Total 0.00". I was wondering if anyone might have an idea as to what might be a solution. Also, does anyone have a repair manual for the 6000 series for sale?

    Thank you for your time,

    John, Escondido, CA

The counter wheels are gummed up , the zero stops on keyboard may not be releasing . Is the machine doing a double cycle?

When you say counter wheels, I assume you mean the display, which on this machine are flags that move up and down, unless I am not understanding. Are you referring to the geared wheels which rotate to activate the particular flags raising?

Yes, the machine will do double cycles in the add position after I try to do a total but If I fiddle with the levers atop the large gear in the picture, it will go back to single cycle. If I try total again, I goes back to double cycle. I enjoy fixing things but I don't really know what I am doing.

Thank you for your help on this!

John, you are correct. The display is little "flags" that set in racks. The counters are little gears mounted close together and set perpendicular to the key banks. There is a counter for the current transaction that holds the total current sale. There is also a counter (may be several) for the total of all transactions. On a "total" operation (moving the lever down), the 6000 runs two cycles. The first cycle reads the counters for total of the current sale and displays it. You should see a total on the display. The second cycle adds the total of the current sale to the counter for all transactions. It has been a really long time since I worked on one of those machines. As stated above, the zero stops (I think they look like little hooks at the bottom of each key bank) may not be moving out of the way on the total operation and that keeps the arms under the key bank from moving up the bank as it "reads" the counter. Those stops are moved by the detent in the key bank when a key is pressed.
